Dr. Chris White told faculty at the Academic Convocation on Aug. 30 in Whitley Auditorium. White, vice president for academic and stu dent affairs and dean of academic affairs, stres sed the importance of upholding high teaching standards. “We seek out the best students we can find,” he added. “I foresee no real change in quality here.” The most important question, he said, is “what do we do with the students we have?” “In a real sense,” White said, “the ‘right’ to complain about students is a basic privilege of the professorial life.” He said he worries most “about faculty who do not complain about the quality of students.” White said, “A hallmark for Elon over many years has been a caring, dedicated faculty.” He suggested that the faculty cannot afford to be “less than dynamic, creative, challenging and caring.” Addressing things he hoped to see happen here. White emphasized the importance of keeping liberal arts combined with career- oriented programs.
